Spanish Novel ‘La Historia De Dinamic’ Is Being Developed As A Drama Series – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Blackbox Media of London and Latin American company EO Media have teamed up to develop a drama series based on a novel about the origins of the famous Spanish video game company Dinamic Software.

The duo opted for Jesús Martínez del Vas’ The History of Dinamic from Madrid-based agency Scenic Rights and signed Javier Olivares, known for creating TVE and Netflix time-travel comedy series The Minister of Tiempo (The ministry of time), as showrunner.

Del Vas wrote the novel in association with the Ruiz brothers, who, as teenagers, created a video game empire from their parents’ home in the early 1980s as Spanish tech companies began to thrive in the international, before going bankrupt. Del Vas spent ten years researching his book and interviewing those involved in the creation of Dinamic.

The 1980s became known as “the golden era of Spanish software”, with the rise of Dinamic alongside the colorful counter-cultural movement “Movida Madrileña” which began after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975.

The series, which Blackbox and EO describe as “bigger than fiction,” will show how the Ruiz brothers ushered in an era of video game and software innovation in the country. It will explore brotherhood and rivalry, love and betrayal and is billed as “a combination of We crashed meets the wolf of Wall Street meets Silicon Valley meets the family melodrama of Luis Miguel The Series, according to the producers.

Olivares will work closely with co-writers Pablo Lara and Bruno Teixidor (The Cosmonaut: transmedia experience) develop the show. Lara worked as a writer on The Ministry of Tiempowhile co-producers Blackbox and EO worked together to develop Luis Sepulveda’s novel Diary of a sentimental killer serial.

Ezequiel Olzanski, CEO of EO Media, said, “We found a story that looks like it’s out of a movie, Hollywood or Silicon Valley, but it’s not. It’s real and it happened here, in Spain, in the 80s, in the middle of the crazy ‘Movida Madrileña’.

Argentina-based Olzanski, a former Gaumont and Endemol executive for Latin America, told Deadline that the writers and producers were working with the three Ruiz brothers on the series’ charting and added that the story could s span multiple seasons, following the lives of siblings at different stages.

Javier Olivares, Showrunner and Executive Producer said: “Dinamic is about the Spain of the 80s, when I was young. When many of us refused to accept that Madrid was a city in black and white, while London and New York were pure colors. It shows the creativity that has spoken and speaks Spanish to the whole world. Without complex and with pride.

Giuliano Papadia, CEO and Creative Director of BlackBox, said: “We couldn’t wish anyone other than Javier, Pablo and Bruno to bring to life a story that we know will fascinate generations of viewers and fans of video games. We are convinced that it will be a Spanish and worldwide success.
