Don Winslow’s latest mystery novel, “City on Fire,” is bonkers. Almost all the characters are hit! Winslow’s fictional account of Irish and Italian mob wars in Rhode Island is riddled with brutal murder. Revenge is not sweet, it is bloody and leads to more violence.
The main character, Danny Ryan, works on the docks of Providence and earns extra money by being muscle for the Murphy family who control illegal gambling, protection scams and the black market for stolen goods in the capital. The Irish Murphy/Ryan gang works in an uneasy alliance with the Italian crew led by the Moretti/Ferri families. Job cuts and percentages were agreed and everything worked out relatively well.
