Thomas Pavel is Emeritus Professor of Romance Languages, Comparative Literature, and a member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. Born in Bucharest, Romania, he obtained a master’s degree from the University of Bucharest and a doctorate 3ecycle at the University of Paris 3. He has taught at the University of Ottawa, at the University of Quebec in Montreal, at the University of California at Santa Cruz and at Princeton University. Visiting professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris during the spring terms of 1983 and 1994, he held the international chair of the Collège de France in 2005-2006 and was a member of the Berlin Wissenschaftskolleg in 2010-2011. .
